There a number of times during the spring when baseball takes a back seat to life. Monday was one of those days.

Jake Peavy, who has done many great things with our servicemen, was at it again on Monday. As part of the Wounded Warrior program, Peavy hosted 13 of the guys at Camelback Ranch.

Peavy could have taken the easy way out, as it was his day to start. Nobody would have blamed him if he begged out after 10 minutes.

Not a chance. Peavy spent over an hour with the guys, taking them around the entire Sox complex. He also signed a ton of autographs, gave out Sox stuff, and introduced them to some of the other players.

I know, we’ll judge him by the results on the field, but it’s what he does off the field for these guys year after year, that counts for a lot more.

I know there are cynics out there that are saying right now, “Peavy only does that because there are cameras around.” If that was true, than why wouldn’t he let us, or anyone, coverer his event with the guys tonight?

Peavy will be joined by 20 other MLB stars in a night of music, story telling and just plain having fun. There will be no pictures or interviews with the guys before, during or after this event.

Peavy had a rough start today, sort of. Looking at the stat line, it looked like he got bombed. However, many of the hits in that 5 run third, were of the dunker variety, especially Josh Reddick’s and Kurt Suzuki’s. It also didn’t help that Peavy left with the bases loaded, only to watch Leyson Septimo give up a bases clearing double to Collin Cowgill.

Peavy was still missing with a number of his pitches. He has roughly 5 starts left so I figure that won’t be happening at the end of March.

I hope the Sox offense finds a rhythm soon. They look, what’s the word……..bad. So far, the Sox have played 9 games, and they have only scored 12 runs in the first 3 innings in those games, or the time the other teams starter is normally in the game. It’s great to beat up the other teams pen, but by the time the Sox get their offense untracked, they are usually in a hole. The silver lining: It’s only spring training.

Fun conversation of the day took place between me and Jarod Mitchell. Yesterday in Scottsdale, Mitchell scored from first on a double. I told him he is almost as fast as me. He looked at me, and started to laugh. Relax people. He is a former wide receiver at LSU. I am a former soccer player, many years removed. There is no way he is as fast as me. haha

Talking Stick in Scottsdale is a beautiful stadium. Every stadium has it’s own personality and allure, but the Salt River Fields are truly a site to behold. After attending the Sox-Angels game on Wednesday in Glendale, you should make your way to Scottsdale for the Sox-Diamondbacks game on Friday. These 2 stadiums are a couple of the nicest Arizona has to offer.

Sox meet the Padres and old buddy Carlos Quentin today (Tuesday) in Peoria.
