With Ozzie Guillen suspended for a couple games, the man in charge of of managing the underperforming White Sox fell to bench coach Joey Cora. Unfortunately, Cora had no luck turning the team around, losing the 2 games Ozzie was gone. 10-4 on Friday, and 6-2 on Saturday.
In the past 2 games, the Sox continue to do themselves in. Very rarely have I seen the strike out, reach 1st base on a wild pitch play, but I saw it 3 times the past 2 nights. I really can’t say who’s at fault. The balls are breaking so hard, and so close to the plate, that plays like that happen. However, AJ Pierzynski has got to stop at least one of those. Maybe the Key one to block was the pitch John Danks threw to Mark Reynolds with two outs in the 6th inning . Reynolds reached base on the strikeout-W/P. Next batter, Matt Weiters smacked a two run home run, giving the Orioles a 5-4 lead. That strikeout goes as it should, Sox get out of that inning holding a 1-run lead. Instead, things went from bad, to worse.
As in the next inning:
The wheels came off the bus, as Baltimore sent 11 men to the plate, scoring 5 runs. Did you catch Jesse Crain’s pitching line? 2/3 of an inning, 0 hit, 4 unearned runs, 3 walks. I don’t remember seeing a line so crooked. Poor Chris Sale, he came in and didn’t look good. I have never been a pitcher, but even I could tell his release point was off.
John Danks can’t catch a break. He should be at least 3-0, but whether it’s him or his slumping teammates, can’t get over the win hump. But what did I tell ya? When the Sox scored a bunch of runs, he will give up a bunch runs. And vice-versa.
Adam Dunn, what can you say. He went 0-3 on Friday, dropping his average to .155. It looked he had a home run on Friday with a perfect Dunn swing, but the ball literally died at the wall in right. The baseball Gods are not smiling on Dunn right now.
Dunn get a start at 1st on Saturday, and did produce a hit, but 1st is owned by Konerko, so they may have to find a spot in the outfield for the big man. Can they use rovers in the big leagues?
Best pitcher on the staff, I am shocked to say is Phil Humber. Humber kept the Sox in the game for 7 innings, leaving down 2-1. Matt Thornton came in and did nothing, giving up 4 runs in less than an inning.
I have never seen an entire team go in to a slump. Beckham is hitting .121 his last 10 games. The last multi hit game for the 2nd baseman was April 8th .vs Tampa Bay. Rios was on April 7th. Dunn has only 2 multi-hit games all season! Juan Pierre has 5 stolen bases, but has been caught 7 times. Plus, he has made 7 errors in left field. Could it be that Humber & Lillibridge, 2 guys that came close to not even making the team, are the most valuable right now? I’m joking, of course, but they have done everything, and more for, the team.
I guess I should be, but I am not concerned about the pitching. Edwin Jackson, maybe, but I think a lot of them are trying to pitch too perfect, because the offense is struggling so badly.
Nice catch by Quentin tonight. It was very reminiscent of Lillibridge’ grab .vs the Yankees. The first one, not the second one.
Other good notes: AJ hit his first home run on Friday, right after Darren Jackson said he had no home runs. Alex Rios hit his first bomb of the season on Saturday. That’s his 1st? That is shocking. Not since 2005 had Rios hit his first home run so late in the season. This is game # 26.
Ozzie is back tomorrow, but what can he do? All he can do is hope his guys start hitting and pitching like they can.
